Project:Girl - Ann
Project:Girl is a film series that takes true stories of girlhood and adapts them into raw narrative films. Through sharing true stories, we normalize our experiences and foster understanding, in the end creating an easier world for women to live in. In 2017, I was excited to collaborate with the Project:Girl team to direct the special animated short film ‘Ann’.
Women have complicated relationships with anger, power, and authority. As girls, aggressive emotions are often buried down in us, and when they bubble up - we are told to quiet them at the cost of our self-expression. Ann follows a young girl's experience with unleashing these emotions, and the mixture of pride and guilt that follows.
Visually, I wanted to create a look and feel for the film that resonated with the visceral experience of memory. I wanted to invoke a sense of nostalgia and chose to use a lot of bright patterns, textures and a collage-like approach within the piece. I think this also linked well to the idea of bringing the characters’ memories to life - everything is brighter, exaggerated and heightened in memory.
